Writerly Writer is Writing Writing Writing

By Cam

So if you couldn’t guess by my post title, I’m busy. Writing. My goal is to finish this Contemporary YA by April 6. I’m a day behind where I need to be. And that means neglecting some stuff.

Like cooking dinner (what’s wrong with Hungry Man?). Cleaning the house (cobwebs don’t bother me in the least). Paying attention to family and friends (although I don’t neglect diaper-changing duties. For obvious ick reasons). Blogging. Yes, sadly this blog is in much need of TLC. But that will have to wait. Until after April 6 <–I’m determined to finish by this date. De-termined.

So I’m going to leave you blog readers (if you’re still there, that is) with one of Inkygirl‘s charming and oh-so-true comics that depicts the writerly writing life of a writer. This particular comic sums up my situation to a tee. (And if you haven’t checked her out, you must.)

Thursday Thirteen

By Cambria Dillon

vegas sign

I’m going to Vegas Ladies and Gents. Yup. I’m leaving Oct. 28 and not coming back until Nov. 4. Now I know most people say that three days is plenty of time to see the sights of Sin City. But since I’ll be there for a week (for a wedding), I thought I’d focus this week’s T13 on some hotspots I’m hoping to hit up. Feel free to add your two cents on places to see, skip, turn the other way, etc…I’m leaving my Frommers at home, so chime in!

  1. Pussycat Dolls Lounge – Okay. I know this is sort of cheesy. But…it’s research. Yes, you heard me. Research. I’m writing a Snow White meets Pussycat Dolls burlesque-esque story, so this really would be research.
  2. Adventuredome at Circus Circus (specifically Lazer Blast) – I’m going on the record to say that this one is not my idea. Hubs is the Best Man in his brother’s wedding and this sporting adventure is part of the bachelor/bachelorette festivities. I should note that I plan on drinking beforehand. Heavily.
  3. Wasted Space at Hard Rock – This is Carey Hart’s nightclub and we have some real rockers (and a former N’Sync-er) attending the wedding event. So we’re on the VIP list at this fine establishment that Thursday night. I think I might be inclined to get me a a glass of Cristal. Or maybe just a cran & vodka. Alright, fine…a beer.
  4. Payard Chocolate – Because Emily Ryan-Davis says this is the best place to buy chocolate. Even weird should-not-be-paired-with-chocolate chocolate. Like curry chocolate. Apparently it’s a must try.
  5. Madame Tussaud’s “After Dark” – This sounds pretty cool. Live actors mingle with the wax figures to make for a frightful event where the lights are out at Madame Tussaud’s this Halloween season.
  6. Jubilee at Bally’s – This is the epitome of a good old fashioned Vegas show. I’m hoping its better than Elizabeth Berkley in the faux-Goddess show in Showgirls. And yes, I did see that movie (and still bitter about losing those 2 hours of my life). Originally my vote for a show was for Thunder Down Under. But Hubs vetoed me.
  7. Bellagio fountains – Hey–if George Clooney and Brad Pitt rested their elbows on the rail to watch the water show in Oceans Eleven (and Twelve and Thirteen)…you bet I’ll be there!
  8. Hart & Huntington – I used to watch that show on TLC and I find the sound of a buzzing tattoo gun quite therapeutic. Plus I find something sexy about a man getting tatted up. Who knows…maybe I’ll walk away with some dainty little ink…what happens in Vegas…
  9. The Venetian – I spent my honeymoon in Italy and a whole week alone in Venice. Now, I know the pumped in water in The Venetian won’t hold a dime to the real Grand Canal, but there’s something uber-romantic about being with the man you love, in a gondola, lazying down a canal.
  10. The Eiffel Tower at Paris – Since I’ll probably never go to the real Eiffel Tower, I might as well settle for the next best thing.
  11. Las Vegas sign – It’s a must-see, must-take-pic staple.
  12. Fright Dome at Circus Circus – Five acres of fright zones, rides, freak shows, haunted houses, attractions…OMG I’m so stoked to go to this!!!
  13. Casinos – Doesn’t matter which one. I’m not picky. Hell, I’ll probably only throw a quarter into a slot and call it a day. But you can’t go to Vegas and not spin the dice on something!

By Cam

Man, I love me some Tuesday releases! Check out these books from a few fellow divas. Enjoy!

Scent of Cin by Ella Drake

Death brought Cin her love, a sexy half-demon she can’t resist

Half-demon Vedo resurrects the newly-dead Cinnamon Murphy, detective, bane of the Hellions — and all woman. Vedo needs her to find his son, product of a forced union with a powerful demoness, but Vedo gets more than he bargains for. Once Cin is no longer a shade, her scent becomes a lure his Nephilim nature can’t resist. Cin finds that being raised from the dead gives her uncontrollable cravings for heat, especially for the hot man who needs her help, a man she’s sworn to kill.

Before publication, Scent of Cin was the 2008 novella winner of the Stroke of Midnight Contest, sponsored by Passionate Ink.

This erotic paranormal romance is available at Cobblestone Press.

Word of the Day

By Cam

Oh Wednesday, how I wish you were really Friday. But alas, you’re not. So sad. Although I guess I can’t complain too much. Hubs and I are gonna get our old school rock on when we pile into First Mariner Arena in Baltimore to see Journey in concert tonight  (part of my bday gift to him for when he turned 30). I have to admit I’m not a die-hard fan or anything. But I wanted to do something fun for him other than our normal dinner out. It was a tough call since my alternative choice was getting tickets to see Sesame Street Live (which I found out we’re taking the baby girl to anyway). Se la vie. Journey today, Elmo on Saturday. What a life.

And as is typical for a Wednesday, here is the fab-o word of the day courtesy of Addictionary:

Tuesday Releases!

By Cam

It’s Tuesday. You know what that means…releases, releases, releases! Check out these hot stories by Inez Kelley and Ciar Cullen!

Myla by Moonlight by Inez Kelley is now available from Samhain Publishing

Magic bites… and its name is Myla.

Created at Prince Taric’s birth, Myla is a spell, an enchantment designed to appear and protect him when he needs it most. She has always been content to do her duty…until one night of forbidden passion leaves her longing to experience life—and love—as a mortal woman. Yet the risk is too great. Even if her blood runs as red as his, she can never give him the one thing he needs: a child.

Taric’s blessing—and his curse—is knowing the kingdom’s future depends on his producing an heir to continue the bloodline. His bond with Myla has always been that of protector and protected. When it suddenly becomes something much more, he unwittingly sentences his people to certain death.

An old enemy is plotting to destroy all he holds dear: his lands, his people, his father, and his lover. And this time, even if they fight tooth and blade, their shared magic may not be enough to save them…

The Egyptian Demon’s Keeper – Ciar Cullen

Love—it’s the real thing. And complicated as hell…

Archeologist Eliza Schneider assumes her meeting with an exotic stranger in the Egyptian desert was a heat-induced hallucination…until he materializes in New York. She has to give the tall, handsome Egyptian high marks for originality with his pick-up line: they’re fated to save the world together. The master/servant thing goes a long way toward sweeping her off her feet, but it’s easier to believe he’s just another in her long line of poor romantic choices.

Kasdeya, the Fifth Satan, waited eons for his Keeper to find her way to his tomb amongst the ancient ruins. He only has a limited time to convince Eliza that her role is critical to help defeat the loathsome Deumos, a female demon who has laid her claim to bearing his child—a child that will bring down mortals.

Trouble is, Eliza doesn’t even believe Kasdeya is real. If he can’t convince her he isn’t an illusion—and neither is their love—Deumos will win.

Wednesday’s Word of the Day

By Cam

This Wednesday marks the middle of a very looooong week for me. I was on vacation all last week and had a marvelous time. But I think my brain is still back in Florida. On the beach. Sipping margaritas. With salt.
This week at the day job has been painstakingly slow and no amount of java in the world has been able to get me out of this dilapidated funk. Hopefully today’s word of the day will spark…I dunno…something.

Goals? What goals?

By Cambria Dillon

Hello. My name is Cambria and I’m a non-goal maker. (Insert round of applause here.)

I guess if I were being technical though, I could say I’m a non-goal completer rather than a maker because I do have accomplishments in mind and realize what I need to do to get there. But you won’t find any fancy Goal Charts or To-Do Lists, or Gold Stars, or anything that’s remotely outlined in my world. If you haven’t noticed from previous posts, I tend to shy away from organization.

The reason why I think I’m a non-goal completer isn’t because I don’t understand the value or necessity of it, but because I lack the follow-through. Maybe there’s something wired wrong in my noggin or maybe it’s, I dunno—life—that gets in the way of completing my goals. But I find that if I skip one day with the promise of making it up the next and I don’t, then it snowballs until I’m so behind that I just say, “The heck with it” and go off to the next thing.

Somehow though, I manage to get things done even if I don’t do it by way of hard goals. My admiration is high for those goal makers out there. You know who you are— you make a list, follow it daily, and cross it off when the task is complete then repeat and repeat until at the end of the week, or month, or year, you breathe a sigh of self-satisfaction and look at us non-goal makers and say, “Neener, neener.”

Well, in the theme of my post last week of trying new things, I’ve decided to…drum roll please…MAKE A GOAL and FINISH IT. Astonishing, I know.  What I’ve done to make myself accountable is post a thread in Romance Divas with my own personal goals.

Here they are:

  1. Write at least 500 words a day. Every day.
  2. Shut off internal editor
  3. Do not get sidetracked by shiny new web site
  4. Have first draft completed by Oct. 28
  5. Blog in advance so as not to get sidetracked by shiny new web site (see above)

Note: I can already say with certainty that I’ve already failed miserably with #3. What can I say? It’s so pretty, and shiny, and new…And #2 is real close to joining the ranks of the non-completed as well. But I’m happy to report I’ve written MORE than 500 words a day since Friday, which is when I made these goals. (And yes, you may pat me on the back.)

In addition to the above goals, I’m also participating in the Divas August NaNoWriMo (nothing officially tied to the real NaNoWriMo, but just a fun thing to stay motivated). I’ve pledged to write 30K for the month and am happy to say—so far, so good.

So, tell me…are you a fellow non-goal maker/completer or a goal maker?
